7 Realistic Strategies To Stop Resting Too Often In a Work Day

Aahhh golden break time. Everyone’s favorite part of the day. But are you overdoing it? Can you improve your discipline and get more from yourself?
Sitting at a computer for hours at a time is soul-destroying (not to mention really really bad for your back. But too many breaks does not a bank account make.
So how do you strike the balance?
The physical facts:
- As my chiropractor tells me often, you need to get up and move every 30 minutes. Every hour at a bare minimum.
- The brain is not like a computer. It gets tired depending on the type of work. For example, classical musicians can practice for 3 to 4 hours a day before they are exhausted and can do no more. They can still do other activities, answer emails, cook a meal, have a meeting, plan a stage layout, that sort of thing, but no more practice. Dedicated concentrated work is limited.
- Context switching (answering emails while trying to solve a complex problem elsewhere) will make it harder for you to complete both tasks well.
- You need to eat. Hunger is a pain signal. Being in pain is distracting and distracts you from work.
- You need to go to the toilet. Holding it in is bad for your bladder…
